A close relative of the Kudu and Nyala, the bushbuck is a rather large antelope which relies on vegetation for cover. Bushbuck can be found in most of sub-Saharan Africa, especially in areas where it can easily be concealed. Bushbuck will live anywhere from sea level to mountain-tops in all types of habitats from rainforest to sub desert terrain. The colour varies depending on geographic location. Eastern and southern bushbuck are yellow in colour with relatively few markings. Northern and western bushbuck are reddish coloured with stripes and spots. Both sexes darken with age.

In 1630, the Portuguese “Sao Concalo” ship which got shipwrecked at Robberg in March that year, had been anchored at the mouth of the Piesang River, according to the “Sao Concalo” article in the Sunday Times of 22 June 1924. This shows us that Piesang Valley is mentioned as early as the early 17th century, even before our town had its name. Ships came all the way up the Piesang River from the earliest times, even before the establishment of Plettenberg Bay, which proves that Piesang Valley area developed before the Plett CBD area developed, and there were many people and many labourers living in Piesang Valley where the first church and later schools were built, to provide in the spiritual and educational needs of the inhabitants.

Zebra prefer open grassy plains and park-like savanna and prefer but do not require grazing with shortish grass. They occur in areas with available water nearby as they are very dependent on water. Zebras are highly sociable animals. They live in small family groups (small herds) of about 3 to 10 zebras consisting of a few mares, young zebras and an adult stallion. Larger herds are sometimes seen but it usually happens when different herds come together temporarily. Sometimes bachelor herds are formed by a few stallions only. Some adult stallions may also stay alone at certain times.
