2025-06 Petite Provence

Overview, trip report, images, and reviews from our visit to Petite Provence.

Salt Rock & Petite Provence: June 2025

Overview

This was our first extended visit to Salt Rock. Previously, we had only made brief stops there on two occasions while staying in Umhlanga, doing day trips to Salt Rock and Ballito. True to our routine, we exchanged our banked timeshare points through RCI for this trip.

The journey there and back went smoothly, even though we drove during Comrades weekend and returned just before another long weekend. We did encounter a few delays due to roadworks near Pietermaritzburg and around Ballito. On our way down and back, we made pit stops at Harrismith Wimpy (Bergview) and The Windmills.

Although the weather forecast wasn’t looking great because of a cold front, it turned out to be pretty decent.

From my pre-trip research, I discovered that there would be plenty of opportunities for landscape (seascape) photography, which I was excited about.

We were looking forward to relaxing and unwinding after a recent hectic time.

Petite Provence – Our home base

Petite Provence B&B is a 5-star French-style Guest House, conveniently located just a 20-minute drive from King Shaka International Airport. It resembles a Provençale Villa, adorned with lovely lavender and colours that remind you of Provence in the South of France. Nestled next to a conservation park and surrounded by a peaceful tropical garden, the Provence-inspired rooms are only 300m away from Salt Rock’s main swimming beach, providing an ideal spot to relax and unwind.

Upon arrival, we experienced a quick and smooth check-in process, allowing us to get settled in no time. Our lovely Lavender Room, located on the ground floor, features a patio that opens up to the garden and pool area. It includes a four-poster king bed along with a bathroom fitted with both a corner bath and a shower. There’s even a small kitchen nook, complete with all the amenities we need. Rooms are equipped with air-conditioning/heater, Wi-Fi, DSTV, fridge and hospitality trays, 100% cotton percale linen, beach towels, hairdryer, luxurious toiletries, patio, and private entrance. Rooms are serviced daily.

Throughout our stay, the staff members were consistently friendly, polite, and always ready to help when needed. We felt safe at the Guest House and had no worries about our security.

Just a heads-up for RCI exchange guests: breakfast is not included.

Daily Activities

Most of our mornings were filled with photography, rising early to capture the stunning sunrise views at the beach. After enjoying lunch at a local restaurant, we spent our afternoons reading and unwinding. As the day wound down, we returned to our photography to capture the beautiful seascapes during the Golden Hour.

Our photography locations were mainly:

  • Salt Rock Tidal Pool
  • Chaka’s Rock Tidal Pool
  • Thompson’s Bay Tidal Pool
  • Beaches
    • Sheffield beach
    • Willard Beach
    • Clark Bay
    • Salmon Bay

General Travel Observations

Salt Rock and Ballito

Salt Rock is a charming little coastal village located just north of Ballito and Shaka’s Rock along the beautiful Dolphin Coast of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. It’s a popular holiday spot for many locals. You can find it about 52 kilometres (just a 40-minute drive) northeast of Durban. Nestled about 7 kilometres (4 miles) north of Ballito, Salt Rock is bordered by Sheffield Beach to the north, Shaka’s Rock to the south, Simbithi Eco Estate to the southwest, and Umhlali to the west.

Restaurants:

  • Col’Cacchio is one of our favourite dining spots, and we enjoyed it twice during our trip. The food was well-prepared, and we found the prices quite reasonable.
  • Unfortunately, our lunch experience at 2 On Main wasn’t great, as a few menu items were out of stock.
  • After that, we thought about trying Fig Tree, but since they only serve carvery on Sundays, it wasn’t what we were in the mood for.
  • Next, we headed to Fiammo Grill, and it turned out to be the highlight of our culinary adventures! The food was exquisite, the ambience was lovely, and the service was top-notch. It was such a delight!
  • On the day before we left, we had lunch at Salt Cafe, which had a nice vibe and tasty pizza. Recommended!

Shopping Malls & Shopping Centres

Salt Rock is served by two shopping centres, including New Salt Rock Shopping Centre in the New Salt Rock City development and Tiffany’s Centre at the corner between N2 and Salt Rock Road.

Safety

As with any travel destination, normal safety precautions should be taken to avoid falling victim to crime. Visitors should be mindful of their surroundings and take normal precautions against petty crime.
