Tusks

The rock hyrax, also called rock badger, rock rabbit, and Cape hyrax is a medium-sized terrestrial mammal native to Africa and the Middle East. Commonly referred to in South African English as the dassie. Along with other hyrax species and the manatee, this species is the most closely related to the elephant. Prominent in and apparently unique to hyraxes is the dorsal gland, which excretes an odour used for social communication and territorial marking. The gland is most clearly visible in dominant males. The rock hyrax has a pointed head, short neck, and rounded ears. They have long black whiskers on their muzzles. The rock hyrax has a prominent pair of long, pointed tusk-like upper incisors which are reminiscent of the elephant, to which the hyrax is distantly related.

The Robberg Peninsula is situated on the western side of Plettenberg Bay. In the 15th century Robberg was first named “Cabo talhado” (Sharp Cape) by the Portuguese and in around 1750 it was named Robberg (Seal Mountain) by the Dutch. Robberg has a unique rock formation where some of the oldest and youngest rocks in the world can be found in close proximity to each other. Robberg consists of 3 distinct layers known as the Robberg formation. Robberg is not only a unique geological site, but is also archaeological very interesting, with caves along the Peninsula that were inhabited for more than 19 thousand years.

Central Beach – Often the busiest beach in Plett. Lifeguards on duty in season. It’s the launch site for Marine Safaris, dive charters and ocean kayaking tours and facilities include restaurants, bars, public toilets and the local National Sea Rescue Station; 2 km / 2 minutes from Plett Central. Plettenberg Bay boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in South Africa. The town’s 20 kilometres of picturesque Indian Ocean coastline features pristine, unspoilt sandy beaches. There are several different types of beaches open to the public in Plett. There are lagoon areas for young children and there are hot surfing and bodyboarding spots for the more adventurous. Plett has 6 premier, internationally recognised “Blue Flag” status beaches; including Robberg 5, Lookout Beach, Keurboomstrand, The Dunes, The Singing Kettle and Nature’s Valley.
