Old-timer

Clarens is a small town situated in the foothills of the Maluti Mountains in the Free State province of South Africa and nicknamed the “Jewel of the Eastern Free State”. It was established in 1912 and named after the town of Clarens in Switzerland where exiled Paul Kruger spent his last days. Clarens is an artists’ haven with many well-known artists either living in or frequenting the village, with many art galleries scattered around the village square and the town. The tranquil village ambience combined with scenic views and a mild climate has made Clarens a popular getaway for city dwellers from Johannesburg, Bloemfontein and Durban, among other places. Clarens is known for its spectacular sandstone mountains and wonderful climate; it is one of the most picturesque spots in South Africa and has recently been acclaimed as the best Trout Fishing waters in South Africa. There are various establishments offering accommodation, including bed & breakfasts, self-catering, lodges, backpackers and farm guest houses in the surrounding area.

Segaia – a name you’re not likely to forget once you’ve visited this charming lodge. One of the jewels of Northern Gauteng, it offers an escape to the magic of the bush that reminds of areas far more remote. Our Conservancy is well stocked with game, blessed with prolific bird life, and is infused with that unique African magic found only in the bush. Segaia Bush Retreat has a watering hole right in front of the lodge where wild game come to drink. Enjoy, therefore, stunning African sunsets on the deck whilst watching zebra, kudu, impala and warthog wandering the grounds of the Lodge. A lucky few may even spot the reclusive leopard. A paradise for birdwatchers with more than 450 bird species, many of which can be spotted from the lodge itself. Alternatively, you can follow the walking trails through the Conservancy and seek the rarer birds on foot.

Clarens is a small town surrounded by its main attraction mountains. Especially since the village itself is situated in the foothills of the Maloti Mountain range of the Kingdom of Lesotho. The never-ending landscape of mountains such as the Rooiberge, the range encompassing Clarens and Maloti, also spelt Maluti is just some of the town’s tourist attractions. The sandstone cliffs are also a characteristic feature not only in the geology of the town but also in its architecture as most private or guest homes in the Clarens Valley are made from or clad in sandstone, and even the Golden Gate Highlands National Park has sandstone formations.
