Golden Gate Highlands National Park is located in Free State, South Africa, near the Lesotho border. The park’s most notable features are its golden, ochre, and orange-hued deeply eroded sandstone cliffs and outcrops, especially the Brandwag rock.

Montane fynbos sweeps up the wind-driven, rocky slopes awash in salt spray, whilst a collection of ocean seabirds – albatross, broad-billed prion and Sub-antarctic skua – fill the air with their calls as they head to and fro from the Sub-Antarctic island, Marion Island, south east of the peninsula. It is also a breeding area for the rare African black oyster-catcher.
Gum trees (Eucalyptus sp.) are important commercial trees contributing towards South Africa’s economy, particularly within the forestry industry. They are also used in other sectors, with the bee-keeping industry relying on gums as a bee foraging resource. Six gum trees are regulated under the NEMBA Alien and Invasive Species Regulations.
