Stairway

The circular walk of the Robberg Hiking Trail will take you around the Robberg peninsula. You’ll be treated to views over the bay and the Tsitsikamma mountains in the distance, and see exceptional botanical gems and geological profiles. You’ll pass the Cape Fur seal colony en route to the halfway point, and upon return, you’ll cross over to an island with a pristine sandy beach perfect for swimming. You’ll also see a Cape Gull colony here. Between May and November, look out for the many Southern Right and Humpback whales that will breach and lobtail on both sides of the peninsula.
Highlights:
* Over 100 species of birds, including the Black Oystercatcher
* Dassies, seals, whales and dolphins are common sightings, but you may be lucky enough to see other wildlife, including grysbok, duiker, bushbuck, Cape clawless otters and mongooses.

Situated on the east coast of South Africa just north of the vibrant Durban city is one of the greatest coastlines in the world, Umhlanga Rocks. People from around the world flock to the holiday resort village of Umhlanga to relax and have fun. Umhlanga is perfectly positioned for any part of your South African journey. It is just a ten-minute drive on the N2 (southbound) from King Shaka Airport and situated on the northern beaches of KwaZulu-Natal. Umhlanga’s first beach cottage was built on a rocky site overlooking the sea in 1869. The reflective roof of the cottage was also used as a beacon by passing ships’ captains to navigate safely around Umhlanga’s rocky headland. Then in the 1930s, the cottage was transformed into the Oyster Box hotel and in 1953 Umhlanga’s distinctive red and white lighthouse was built to warn seafarers away from the hazards of the rocks. The first hotel in Umhlanga was built in the 1920s by the daughter of Sir Marshall Campbell, Virginia. Other hotels soon popped up after these two and the village of ‘Umhlanga Rocks’ became the most preferred area for locals to visit during their holidays.

Its distinctive appearance is what makes the uMhlanga ‘whalebone’ pier one of the most iconic landmarks in South Africa and indeed the world. Media giant CNN recently confirmed the pier naming it as the world’s most beautiful in 2014 after freelance writer Tamara Hinson began researching piers worldwide. A firm favourite with photographers, the 80-meter walkway, was built in 2007 and represents a whale’s skeleton. It is an extension of an underground culvert that helps disperse excess stormwater from the land into the ocean. The distinctive whalebone structure won the South African National Award for Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement.
