The Johannesburg Zoo is situated in the leafy northern suburb of Johannesburg covers 55 hectares of land. The zoo was founded in 1904 when the land was donated by the firm of Herman Ekstein. The Zoo houses over 320 species of animals and is internationally accredited and highly respected for its husbandry practices of maintaining a high standard of animal welfare, nutrition and ethical conduct, ensuring the physical and psychological well-being of all its animals.

The pygmy hippopotamus is a small hippopotamid which is native to the forests and swamps of West Africa, primarily in Liberia with small populations in Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Ivory Coast. The pygmy hippo is reclusive and nocturnal.
