Stately

The red hartebeest bull measures about 1.3 m to the shoulders with a weight of 150 kg, whereas cows weigh only 120 kg. The red hartebeest is a big antelope with a sloping back and slim face, reddish-brown in colour. Both cows and bulls have horns with many rings. There are 12 subspecies of hartebeest in Africa, the red hartebeest being the only occurring in South Africa. It is more widely distributed today due to its reintroduction on game farms and in nature reserves. The name ‘hartebeest’ derives from the Dutch word for deer ‘hert’ and ‘beest’ meaning beast. ‘Hartebeest’ was thought to refer to the shape of a heart, but it was named so by early Boers who described the animal to look like a deer.

Sloped

Zebra prefer open grassy plains and park-like savanna and prefer but do not require grazing with shortish grass. They occur in areas with available water nearby as they are very dependent on water. Zebras are highly sociable animals. They live in small family groups (small herds) of about 3 to 10 zebras consisting of a few mares, young zebras and an adult stallion. Larger herds are sometimes seen but it usually happens when different herds come together temporarily. Sometimes bachelor herds are formed by a few stallions only. Some adult stallions may also stay alone at certain times.

Segaia Bush Retreat has a watering hole right in front of the lodge where wild game come to drink. Enjoy, therefore, stunning African sunsets on the deck whilst watching zebra, kudu, impala and warthog wandering the grounds of the Lodge. A lucky few may even spot the reclusive leopard. A paradise for birdwatchers with more than 450 bird species, many of which can be spotted from the lodge itself. Alternatively, you can follow the walking trails through the Conservancy and seek the rarer birds on foot.
