Described best by local author Dalene Matthee in her series of books set in the forest, Knysna Forest is beautiful, bestrewn with forest walks and hiking trails that allow visitors to explore its perimeters. Knysna Forest, in some places so dense it borders on impenetrable, is a marvellous mix of ancient trees, both local and exotic. Tree ferns, creepers, flowers and the elusive Knysna lourie, its call heard more often than it is seen, are also part of the forest. The thick canopy of ironwood, stinkwood, Outeniqua yellowwood, real yellowwood, Cape holly, white pear, wild fig, milkwood, Cape beech, bastard saffron, assegai and kamassi trees covers 568 square kilometres between the Krom River and Mossel Bay, sprawling across the southern slopes of the Outeniqua Mountains. Together with the Amatole forests, further inland, it makes up Africa’s southernmost Afromontane forest. Today this thick, sweeping forest rich with birdlife and a collection of animals that include the endemic Knysna dwarf chameleon is protected.

Umhlanga is a fun seaside town. The long beaches stretch into the distance, frequented all year by locals and visitors. The 2 main swimming beaches have lifesavers. There are pools in the rocky outcrops along the shore for families with children to paddle in. The main swimming beach is the Bronze beach. The efficient Sharks Board sends crews daily on ski boats to check the nets to ensure safe swimming. Their headquarters in Umhlanga Ridge have interesting audiovisual lectures daily. There is a strong water lifestyle culture. No wet suits are needed as the ocean is warm all year for surfing, swimming, scuba diving, kiteboarding, fishing and sailing. The winter is mild and brief, from June to August, and the rest of the year warm with a summer rainfall of evening showers. A wide paved Promenade curves for 3 kilometres along the beach overlooking the sea, frequented by runners and walkers all day until dark.

The small town of Clarens is situated at the foothill of its attractive feature, the Maloti Mountain. It offers beautiful natural surroundings of many things, such as another of its famous mountains, the Rooiberge. Pristine dams, rivers and streams that are ideal for fly fishing and the best Trout fishing spots in South Africa (SA) and great grade 3 and 4 water rapids when white water river rafting in the Ash River. While the town’s great, open space of land, a non-existent luxury in the bigger cities is a chance to be out in the fresh air, participating in the towns favourite sports of Horseback riding or playing Golf. Archery, going on a Hot air balloon ride, 4×4 Trails, Hiking, Abseiling, Mountain biking, Quad riding, the list is endless.
