Segaia – a name you’re not likely to forget once you’ve visited this charming lodge. One of the jewels of Northern Gauteng, it offers an escape to the magic of the bush that reminds of areas far more remote. Our conservancy is well stocked with game, blessed with prolific bird life, and is infused with that unique African magic found only in the bush. Segaia Bush Retreat has a watering hole right in front of the lodge where wild game come to drink. Enjoy, therefore, stunning African sunsets on the deck whilst watching zebra, kudu, impala and warthog wandering the grounds of the lodge. A lucky few may even spot the reclusive leopard. A paradise for bird watchers with more than 450 bird species, many of which can be spotted from the lodge itself. Alternatively, you can follow the walking trails through the conservancy and seek the rarer birds on foot.

The female rhino is pregnant for about 18 months (depending on the species of the rhino), after which only one calf is born. At birth, this calf will weigh between 25 and 45 kilograms. It is born fairly weak but is able to stand up and begin walking within minutes of the birth, an incredible feat for one so young. Within the first few hours of its life, it will begin to suckle milk from its mother, which it will continue to do until about 18 months of age. The mother will allow her calf to drink milk exclusively for the first week or two. After that, she will take it to areas with soft grass and teach it to eat the young, juicy vegetation of the area. The rhino calf is born without a horn.

The Oxalis is a delicate perennial herb that stays fairly short and small, reaching heights of between five and 30 centimetres. The compound leaves have three leaflets (resembling clover) and either has a tiny stalk or none at all. The flowers occur on their own (as opposed to in clusters) and have five petals and five free sepals. They are found in pink, white, red, purple and yellow varieties. The leaves and flowers droop or fold closed after nightfall. A seed-filled capsule is the fruit of the plant and can bear only one seed, or many at a time. The sap in the stem of the plant is sour, a characteristic for which this edible plant is often known.
