Desolation

Lion cubs are born blind and don’t begin to open their eyes until around three to four days old. Their eyes are a blue-grey colour at first and begin to change to an orangey brown by the age of two to three months. Lion’s eyes are quite large with round pupils that are three times as big as a human’s. A second eyelid, called a nictitating membrane, helps to clean and protect the eye. Lions can’t move their eyes from side to side very well, so have to move their whole head when they want to look in different directions. At night, a reflective coating on the back of the eye helps to reflect moonlight. This makes a lion’s eyesight eight times better than that of a human. They also have a white patch of fur below their eyes which helps to reflect even more light back into the eye.

Mischief

Black-backed Jackals are a widely distributed species that are known for their cunning and daring. They are often seen nipping in to steal a morsel from Lions on a kill. Mainly nocturnal but seen regularly during the day, this handsome animal has a call to remember. The Black-backed Jackal feeds on small mammals, reptiles, birds, eggs, carrion and fruit. They do scavenge but are hunters in their own right.

Embark on a floral journey of discovery at the Pretoria National Botanical Garden, a treasure chest of South African flowering plant species and trees and definitely among the more beautiful of the tourist attractions in South Africa. The Pretoria National Botanical Garden, located in the suburb of Brummeria in east Tshwane, was established in 1946 after the University of Pretoria’s experimental farm and private properties were acquired by the Department of Agriculture. The garden was formerly known as the Transvaal National Botanic Gardens and was primarily a research facility under the management of the Botanical Research Institute, which dates back to 1903.
