A favourite holiday destination with locals, Umhlanga’s beaches are packed with both locals and tourists in season (and often out of season as well, thanks to the temperate climate). The paved walkway allows visitors to explore the number of beachfront restaurants in Umhlanga before heading to the notorious Umhlanga Lighthouse. This beautiful beach is known for its safe swimming waters, making it ideal for families with small children or for those that are wary around the ocean. It is no small feat to have achieved Blue Flag status, and Umhlanga Rocks is proud of carrying this esteemed title. This is only awarded to beaches that are clean, safe, aesthetically pleasing, and actively promote environmental responsibility and education. This is one of only seven Blue Flag beaches in the province. Although relatively quiet, Umhlanga Beach is still popular amongst tourists, who love to stroll the long stretches (both sandy and paved) and see the restaurants and hotels perched along the coast. The Umhlanga Lighthouse is also in this vicinity and remains a landmark attraction. Make sure you book into one of the Umhlanga Hotels so the beach is right on your doorstep for an early morning stroll or swim before breakfast.

The Umhlanga Coast is a magnificent stretch of the South African shoreline. It shows off the splendour and wonder of this country in a tranquil display that remains extremely powerful. This is part of KwaZulu-Natal and is very close to the city centre of Durban, which is the province’s main city and one of South Africa’s major metropolises. However, the Umhlanga Coast whisks you away from the bustle of city living and to the peaceful prettiness of the Indian Ocean as it lazily dances onto the sand. The Umhlanga Coast is characterised by long stretches of sandy beaches that promise stunning backdrops against which to swim, surf or sunbathe. The Indian Ocean has particularly warm waters, averaging 24 to 26 degrees during the summer. There are a number of beaches along the Umhlanga Coast, spread through the areas of Umhlanga itself, La Lucia, Mount Edgecombe and Umdloti.
