Carved

Clarens is part of the scenic Highlands Route and is surrounded by mountains. The Rooiberge is the range encompassing the village, whilst further towards the southeast are the Maluti mountains in shades of purple and blue. All around are the sandstone cliffs with their multi-coloured layers – these horizontal strata are a characteristic feature of the area. Many homes in the Clarens Valley are made from or clad in sandstone. The rock was formed when the area was a desert 190-196 million years ago. Sand dunes built up over time and the sand particles were squeezed together to form a weak rock. Black stripes on the rock can be seen, even long after it has rained. These are areas where water seeps out of the rocks. Minerals from the top basalt layer are carried in the water and these stain the rocks black. The water enables organisms like algae and moss to live on the rock as well.

Infinity

Gods Window is so called for the panoramic view of the Lowveld more than 900 m down into the lush indigenous forest clad ravine. The majestic cliffs plunge over 700 meters to the Lowveld and the private game reserves which have made the area one of South Africa’s main wildlife destinations. God’s Window is a small part of a 250km long earthwork of sheer cliffs and extravagant beauty. One can observe the hills and forests as far as the eye can see. In fact, it seems as if one can see forever! With magnificent views, canyons, rock formations and waterfalls, God’s Window is truly an area of breathtaking scenic splendour. It is no wonder that Mpumalanga is known as Paradise Country.

Skylight

The town of Plettenberg Bay lies almost on the border of the Western and Eastern Cape. Built on a hillside, most of the town is on a steep slope leading down to the sea, which means that regardless of where you find yourself accommodated, you will be treated to spectacular views of the bay and surrounding hills and mountains.
