A lion pride consists of a few adult males, related females and cubs. Females form the stable social unit in a pride and do not tolerate outside females. Membership only changes with the births and deaths of lionesses, although some females leave and become nomadic. The average pride consists of around 15 lions, including several adult females and up to four males and their cubs of both sexes. Groups of female lions typically hunt together, preying mostly on large ungulates. In a pride, lionesses do most of the hunting. In typical hunts, each lioness has a favoured position in the group, either stalking prey on the “wing” then attacking or moving a smaller distance in the centre of the group and capturing prey fleeing from other lionesses. An adult lioness requires an average of about 5 kg of meat per day. Pride lionesses often synchronise their reproductive cycles and communal rearing and suckling of the young, which suckle indiscriminately from any or all of the nursing females in the pride. Lionesses with cubs of their own are more likely to be tolerant of another lioness’s cubs than lionesses without cubs. Females have a typical weight range of 120 to 182 kg.

Clarens is part of the scenic Highlands Route and is surrounded by mountains. The Rooiberge is the range encompassing the village, whilst further towards the southeast are the Maluti mountains in shades of purple and blue. All around are the sandstone cliffs with their multi-coloured layers – these horizontal strata are a characteristic feature of the area. Many homes in the Clarens Valley are made from or clad in sandstone. The rock was formed when the area was a desert 190-196 million years ago. Sand dunes built up over time and the sand particles were squeezed together to form a weak rock. Black stripes on the rock can be seen, even long after it has rained. These are areas where water seeps out of the rocks. Minerals from the top basalt layer are carried in the water and these stain the rocks black. The water enables organisms like algae and moss to live on the rock as well.

The vervet monkey eats a primarily herbivorous diet, living mostly on wild fruits, flowers, leaves, seeds, and seed pods. In agricultural areas, vervets become problem animals, as they will raid bean crops, peas, young tobacco plants, vegetables, fruit, and various grain crops. Carnivorous aspects of their diet include grasshoppers and termites. Raids of cattle egrets and weaver bird nests have been observed where the vervets will eat the eggs and chicks. Mothers can recognize their offspring by a scream alone. A juvenile scream will elicit a reaction from all mothers, yet the juvenile’s own mother had a shorter latency in looking in the direction of the scream, as well as an increased duration in her look. Further, mothers have been observed to help their offspring in conflict, yet rarely aided other juveniles. Other mothers evidently can determine to which mother the offspring belongs. Individuals have been observed to look towards the mother whose offspring is creating the scream.
