Streak

Situated on the east coast of South Africa just north of the vibrant Durban city is one of the greatest coastlines in the world, Umhlanga Rocks. People from around the world flock to the holiday resort village of Umhlanga to relax and have fun. Umhlanga is perfectly positioned for any part of your South African journey. It is just a ten-minute drive on the N2 (southbound) from King Shaka Airport and situated on the northern beaches of KwaZulu-Natal. Umhlanga’s first beach cottage was built on a rocky site overlooking the sea in 1869. The reflective roof of the cottage was also used as a beacon by passing ships’ captains to navigate safely around Umhlanga’s rocky headland. Then in the 1930s, the cottage was transformed into the Oyster Box hotel and in 1953 Umhlanga’s distinctive red and white lighthouse was built to warn seafarers away from the hazards of the rocks. The first hotel in Umhlanga was built in the 1920s by the daughter of Sir Marshall Campbell, Virginia. Other hotels soon popped up after these two and the village of ‘Umhlanga Rocks’ became the most preferred area for locals to visit during their holidays.

Lifeguards

Llandudno Beach is one of the Cape’s most naturally diverse beaches, surrounded by large granite boulders and overlooked by mountains. It is a popular surfing spot, but the swimming can be treacherous, with rough seas and extremely cold water. Llandudno has lifeguards on duty during the summer season, operated by the Llandudno Surf Lifesaving club. It is also the access point for the walk to Sandy Bay, an isolated beach still popular with nudists. On 26 September 1903 the valley was declared a township and named Llandudno after the North Wales seaside resort of Llandudno, which means “Parish of Saint Tudno” in the Welsh language. The striking similarities between Kleinkommetjie Bay in which the valley resides and Llandudno in Wales were noted as reasons for choosing this name.

Candle

The Berlin Falls is a waterfall in Mpumalanga, South Africa. They are located close to God’s Window and the highest waterfall in South Africa’s Mpumalanga province, Lisbon Falls. The Berlin Falls cascade from the centre of a sheer cliff that stands roughly 80m tall. The shape of the falls is likened to a giant candle. A narrow, natural channel at the top of the falls creates the ‘wick’ of the candle, and as the water drops from this point, it fans out creating the rest of the candle before emptying out into the pool below. Berlin Falls gets its name from miners who ventured to South Africa from Europe during the gold rush and named each waterfall in the region after their home towns, or places from their home countries. The falls are on the Sabine River and fall 80 metres (260 ft), dumping into a circular basin flanked by red cliffs.
