The dark silver-grey body is marked with dark vertical bands on the front quarters. Blue wildebeest are characterised by a long black mane and a beard of hair hanging from the throat and neck. Both sexes grow short curved horns. In adult bulls the horns are heavily bossed.
Essentially arboreal animals, but spend a great deal of time on the ground, foraging for food. When disturbed, Tree Squirrels will always seek the refuge of trees. During the night, territorial family groups nest together in holes in trees.
The Johannesburg Zoo is situated in the leafy northern suburb of Johannesburg covers 55 hectares of land. The zoo was founded in 1904 when the land was donated by the firm of Herman Ekstein.
