Here are seven things you might not have known about the uMhlanga Lighthouse:

1. The uMhlanga lighthouse was completed in 1954.
2. Construction was completed in four days and 19 hours.
3. The circular concrete tower, painted white with a red band at the top, stands 21 meters above the beach and has a focal plane height of 25 meters.
4. he fixed red light enables ships waiting to anchor in the outer anchorage, to monitor its position. If the red light is undetectable, it suggests the ship’s anchors have probably dragged and is too close to shore.
5. The lighthouse has never had an official ‘keeper’. The Oyster Box Hotel, which was built in 1869, has been the tower’s custodian.
6. The construction of the lighthouse cost R23 838.
7. There are 95 steps to the top of the uMhlanga Lighthouse.

Mac Mac has twin falls that plunge some 70m into a gorge below. Now a national monument, the waterfall was not always split in two. Gold miners in the area for the gold rush blasted the originally single stream to try and reach the gold-bearing reef over which it drops. Mac Mac tends to revert to one fall during the dry season. You will find the waterfall roughly 13km outside of Sabie on R532 on both the Sabie Waterfalls Route and the Escarpment Route. A viewing platform, which allows really good views of the falls, is a little restricted by a wire safety mesh but you should just get your camera lens through the holes, depending on the camera.

Wisp

The Berlin Falls cascade from the center of a sheer cliff that stands roughly 80m tall. The shape of the falls is likened to a giant candle. A narrow, natural channel at the top of the falls creates the ‘wick’ of the candle, and as the water drops from this point, it fans out creating the rest of the candle before emptying out into the pool below.
