Mac Mac Pools lies south of the Mac Mac Falls, it is well grassed and have a shady picnic site with neat braai and ablution facilities. The brave can test their resilience in the freezing water in one of these naturally formed shallow swimming pools but have to be cautious when going for a swim. If you fancy a gentle walk, then amble along the 3km Secretary Bird Day Trail at the pools which wanders through indigenous bush. You’ll hear robins, thrushes, turacos, greenbuls, and cuckoos in summer, and if you’re lucky, you may well spot the curious-looking Secretary bird which stamps snakes and small rodents to death before gobbling them down.

The facilities along Umhlanga’s beachfront are similar to what you may expect at other world-famous beach destinations. The clean, white sandy beach and warm water of the Indian Ocean waters beckon. There are great seafood restaurants with seating almost on the beach. Park on Lagoon Drive and walk down “Walkway to the Beach” (signposted). Some of South Africa’s most famous hotels are along this coastline – the Cabanas, Breakers, Pearls, Oyster Box, and the legendary Beverly Hills, Sol Kerzner’s first hotel. A beautiful paved walk meanders through a beach garden to your left, while a stroll to the right will bring you all the way up to Umhlanga Beach’s landmark, Umhlanga Lighthouse.

Its distinctive appearance is what makes the uMhlanga ‘whalebone’ pier one of the most iconic landmarks in South Africa and indeed the world. Media giant CNN confirmed the pier naming it as the world’s most beautiful after freelance writer Tamara Hinson began researching piers worldwide. A firm favorite with photographers, the 80-meter walkway, was built in 2007 and represents a whale’s skeleton. It is an extension of an underground culvert that helps disperse excess stormwater from the land into the ocean. The distinctive whalebone structure won the South African National Award for Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement.
