The Garden of Eden does not really qualify as a hiking trail but because it is situated next to the N2 it is a great place to stretch your legs or to take a drive there for a relaxing stroll. The walk follows over 1km of wooden boardwalks and bridges across streams and is entirely wheelchair friendly and ideal for the elderly wanting to visit the forest. There is a number of wooden benches and tables along the trail to sit, snack, picnic, or enjoy your ‘padkos’. There are water and ablution facilities.

Rise

Rise

The Pinnacle Rock is a massive quartzite rock that erupts from the earth’s surface and reaches some 30 metres in height. It is a freestanding rock that towers over the dense indigenous forest of Driekop Gorge in a dramatic display of nature’s quirks and the unique splendour of South Africa. It is littered with stunning, brightly-coloured aloes that not only add to the appeal amongst the local birds and insect species but also make for extra beautiful photographs of the rock and its surrounds. There are public ablutions available here, as well as vendors sitting at this attraction selling African curios and keepsakes. These stalls are a delight to visitors and locals alike and the vendors are friendly and helpful.

Boardwalk

Boardwalk

Garden of Eden forest walk may be short (little more than a path to stretch your legs), but it is through one of the most beautiful examples of Wet Highforest – an unusual kind of forest thick with tall stinkwood, kalander, wit-els, and other moist forest types. It is also old. This particular site where the walk takes place has been open since 1926. The little over 1km walk takes place almost solely on wooden boardwalks that take one across bridges over streams. As a result, this walk is also wheelchair-friendly. The walk has two loops of 500 meters each or one big loop. Just long enough to get in touch with the senses and use the examples of giant moss. lichen, streams, and filtered sunlight to restore journey-tired bodies. There are wooden benches and tables ideal for picnicking.
