Moreleta Kloof December 2023: Photo Highlights

Nestled in the foothills of the Moreleta Kloof lies one of Pretoria’s most exquisite gems, the Moreleta Kloof Nature Reserve. The approximate 100 ha reserve is home to various small game species including Springbuck, Zebra, Blesbok, Impala, Duiker, Bushbuck and Ostrich. Birdwatchers can enjoy the abundant birdlife. Flowing through the reserve is a tributary of the perennial Moreleta Spruit, which has its origins at Wingate Park Country Club. Walking routes have been marked out, catering for everyone from the Sunday stroller to avid hikers. The routes vary in length from 1.5 to 4.6 km showcasing all that the reserve has to offer.

Drakensberg Sun 2018: Photo Highlights

The Drakensberg Mountains, meaning ‘Dragon Mountains’ in Afrikaans, are the highest mountains in South Africa, ranging up to 3,482 m (11,422 ft) in height. In isi-Zulu, the language of the Zulu People, they are called “uKhahlamba”, the ‘barrier of spears’. They are located in the eastern part of South Africa, running for some 1000 km (600 mi) generally southwest to northeast, with a northwesterly bend forming the northeastern border of Lesotho with South Africa. They are drained on the west by the Orange and Vaal rivers, and on the east and south by a number of smaller rivers, the Tugela being the largest. The range thus separates KwaZulu-Natal Province from Free State Province, looming over the nearby coast of Natal.

Rietvlei Nature Reserve 2017: Photo Highlights

Rietvlei Nature Reserve belongs to the City of Tshwane and came into existence as a water scheme to supply drinking water to Tshwane. Rietvlei Nature Reserve is, therefore, a fairly big nature reserve in an urban setting and covers about 4 000 ha. It has been a conservation area since 1929. The large animals that occur in this reserve are eland, buffalo, white rhino, red hartebeest, Burchell’s zebra, black wildebeest, blesbok, cheetah, waterbuck, hippo, ostrich and jackal. Nocturnal animals in the reserve are hedgehog, aardvark, serval, bushpig, aardwolf and brown hyena. Many reptile species also occur in Rietvlei Nature Reserve.
