According to Patricia Storrar, page 23 of her book “Portrait of Plettenberg Bay”, ships came all the way up the Piesang River from the earliest times, even before the establishment of Plettenberg Bay, which proves that Piesang Valley area developed before the Plett CBD area developed, and there were many people and many labourers living in Piesang Valley where the first church and later schools were built, to provide in the spiritual and educational needs of the inhabitants.

Sunrise is actually an illusion since the sun never goes away; it’s the face of the Earth that moves away from it. As our planet rotates toward the east, the sun appears to “rise” in that direction. Sunlight is white, but as it enters the atmosphere, it passes through water droplets and gas molecules that cause it to scatter or refract. This breaks down white light into different shades of colors. Ever wondered why sunlight appears mostly in the hues of red, yellow and orange? That’s because when light gets scattered upon entering the atmosphere, these are the tones that have the longest wavelengths. The blues and the greens are much too short to be visible.

Segaia – a name you’re not likely to forget once you’ve visited this charming lodge. One of the jewels of Northern Gauteng, it offers an escape to the magic of the bush that reminds of areas far more remote. Our Conservancy is well stocked with game, blessed with prolific bird life, and is infused with that unique African magic found only in the bush. Segaia Bush Retreat has a watering hole right in front of the lodge where wild game come to drink. Enjoy, therefore, stunning African sunsets on the deck whilst watching zebra, kudu, impala and warthog wandering the grounds of the Lodge. A lucky few may even spot the reclusive leopard. A paradise for birdwatchers with more than 450 bird species, many of which can be spotted from the lodge itself. Alternatively, you can follow the walking trails through the Conservancy and seek the rarer birds on foot.
